Learn More About Drug Addiction Treatment
Learn more about drug addiction treatment at Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX
Substance abuse is the overuse of drugs or other chemicals that lead to detrimental effects on an individual’s physical and mental health, or on the welfare of others. Substance abuse is characterized by a pattern of continued use of substances despite the occurrence of adverse social consequences, problems with interpersonal relationships, or multiple legal problems. As time passes, what may have once been casual use turns into a physical and psychological need as you are no longer able to function without using. Substance dependence, or addiction, is characterized by the need for increasing amounts of the substance to maintain desired effects, the onset of withdrawal symptoms if drug use ceases, and a majority of a person’s time being spent on drug related activities.

How to Help a Loved One
Helping a loved one get treatment for drug addiction
Those who are addicted to drugs often try to conceal their symptoms and downplay their problems. If you are worried that a loved one may be abusing drugs, here are some of the warnings signs to look out for:
- Changes in appetite or sleep patterns
- Deterioration of physical appearance
- Drop in attendance and performance at work or school
- Engaging in secretive or suspicious behaviors
- Sudden changes in friends, hangouts, and hobbies
- Frequently getting into trouble
- Lack of motivation
- Sudden mood swings
If you see these warning signs in your loved one, then it may be an indication that he or she needs to seek professional help for a substance abuse problem. It is important that you talk to your family member about his or her drug problem and express your concerns. However, it is important that you offer you help and support without being judgmental. When you do speak to your loved one, be prepared to be met with excuses and denial because many addicts do not believe that they have a problem. Furthermore, it is important to realize that while you can support a person with a substance abuse problem and encourage treatment, you cannot force him or her to change.
Why Consider Treatment
Why consider treatment for drug addiction at Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX
While different drugs have different effects, they all have the ability to destroy an individual’s life, leaving them feeling empty and alone. Those who have become addicted to drugs will begin to neglect responsibilities at work, school, or home. Additionally, long-term drug abuse is associated with many health care risks, including infections from sharing needles, cancer, respiratory infections, liver damage, or collapsed veins. The long-term effects of drug addiction can be severe and, in some circumstances, can result in death. However, this can be avoided if addicts get the help they need to change their life and regain control.
A treatment rehab clinic is an extremely valuable way to successfully treat addictions. By entering into a rehab clinic, individuals will first be able to medically detox from the substance, allowing their bodies to become free of all drugs in a safe and secure setting. Additionally, as part of the therapeutic process, people will be provided with the opportunity to confront the underlying emotions that surround their continued drug use, as well as begin treating any co-occurring mental disorders that may be present. By temporarily stepping away from their everyday home lives, these individuals are also being secluded from the triggers that lead to their use. In this setting, people are able to safely and effectively work towards a full recovery.

Types of Treatment
Types of drug addiction treatment offered at Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, TX
Red River is a fully staffed hospital in Wichita Falls, Texas that provides caring and highly effective residential treatment for addiction.
Red River Hospital provides assessments 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, free of charge. These assessments are conducted by a licensed professional and then reviewed by another licensed team member or a supervisor. If it is determined that we will be able to fully meet the patient’s needs, one of our physicians will be contacted and the admissions process will begin. Our dedicated psychiatric staff and multidisciplinary treatment team provide medical management and various therapies designed to encompass all of the needs of all of our patients. We utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques as part of our rehab services, including the following:
Detoxification: When patients come to Red River and are struggling with chemical dependency concerns, we provide a 5-7 day stay in our detox unit. Here, every individual receives 24 hour monitoring by a team of nurses as his or her body becomes cleansed of any toxic substances that are present. For those who are struggling with an addiction to drugs, detox marks the beginning of the therapeutic process. To learn more about this process, please see our detoxification program page.
Medication management: Medications may be used as part of the treatment process for a drug addiction, especially when the person is suffering from a co-occurring mental illness. All patients are seen daily by a psychiatrist in order to ensure that the medications that have been prescribed are working properly and to make any changes that may be necessary.
Group therapy: Red River’s treatment clinic is group-focused, with a variety of groups being held daily. Some of the topics that are covered in these groups include effective communication skills, appropriate assertive behavior skills, anger management, conflict resolution, relapse prevention, and medication management. On our geriatric unit, additional groups and activities are held in order to assist in reality orientation.
Family therapy: At Red River, we see each disorder as a family disorder because these illnesses not only impact the life of the individual who has the disorder, but the lives of each patient’s family members as well. We believe that if the family is not involved, then the changes that are made during the treatment process will not be carried over into the home environment. As a result, we encourage family sessions to occur on a regular basis in all units and can be done via telephone if necessary. On our child and adolescent unit, at least one family session is required prior to the patient’s discharge.
Individual therapy: Individual sessions occur on an as-needed basis for all units except our military unit where patients have a minimum of one individual therapy session each week.
Recreational therapy occurs at least once per day and includes activities such as physical therapy and yoga.
Daily school is provided for all of our child and adolescent patients. There is an onsite school room and lessons are led by our public school district’s teachers.
Continuing Care
Continuing care and levels of treatment for drug
At Red River Hospital in Wichita Falls, we begin planning for discharge the moment patients enter the hospital. This plan is consistently reviewed and updated throughout the individual’s stay so that, when the time for discharge arrives, the patient is already set up for the next step in his or her recovery process. We believe that aftercare is a major part of treatment, so we ensure that the unique needs of each individual will be cared for, whether that be a step down into our partial hospitalization program (PHP) or our intensive outpatient program (IOP), or being provided with referrals for traditional outpatient services. For patients who require a structured plan in order to return to life’s daily routines, Red River’s treatment clinic in Texas also provides onsite therapy through our Pathways program which includes coping skills training and supervised medication management. Whatever your needs may be, our caring and compassionate staff will make sure that you are comfortable and confident as you embark on your next stage of recovery.
